Traditionally (in the days before modern factory production), bushcraft knives had wooden handles, and many manufacturers continue this trend today. For this reason, most high-carbon steel knives have a special coating to resist corrosion. High carbon steel is a popular choice due to its ability to hold an edge, but it is less resistant to corrosion than stainless steel. If you’re unsure, check out our guide to the best knife sharpener. It’s going to get a lot of use, and the easier it is to keep a razor edge, the more likely you are to keep it sharp. Sharpness is essential, but for this knife, ease of sharpening should also be a high priority. Think of it as the knife you want to pass down to your grandkids. While your budget will play a part in your decision, if there’s one knife you’re going to splash out on, a bushcraft knife should be top of your list. The steel used is a big determiner of knife quality. The convex curve from the spine to the blade’s tip makes it durable and versatile, and the large, curved belly is perfect for slicing and whittling.īushcraft knives are not typically serrated, as the portion of the blade nearest the handle is the section you’re most likely to need for delicate tasks. The most common blade shape for a bushcraft knife is a drop point. Small enough for whittling but large enough to prepare firewood. The ideal blade length for a bushcraft knife is around four inches. Whereas survival knives are designed to be a big, blunt-force tool, bushcraft knives are designed for more delicate work. One of the significant differences between a bushcraft knife and a survival knife is the blade length. The size of handle you go for depends on personal preference and the size of your hands. You want something that won’t be easily damaged or affected by water. This makes them lighter but more prone to breakage.įinally, look at the quality and durability of the handle. Cheaper, less durable blades are typically thinner. It’s also worth considering the thickness of the blade. This is the most robust knife design, as the steel runs the entire length of the handle. This makes durability a prime consideration.įor this reason, most bushcraft knives are full tang fixed-blade knives. Unlike a boot knife, for example, which is unlikely to get frequent use, you’ll be using your bushcraft knife every day when you’re in the wild. Knife Style and DurabilityĪ bushcraft knife is a workhorse. It may be a jack-of-all-trades, but your criteria when shopping for a bushcraft knife is quite specific. They are also sturdy and well made – a prime consideration in a survival situation. The beauty of the bushcraft knife is that it hits the sweet spot between being small enough to carry easily and large enough to perform well across various tasks. If you see bigger as better, you may want to get a survival knife instead. It’s not explicitly designed as a self-defense tool (see here if you want the best self-defense knife), and in most cases, it’ll be too small for clearing large brush or branches. Of course, no knife does it all (or at least not well), so the bushcraft knife does have a few limitations. From whittling wood to cutting small branches for shelter-building, gutting fish and game to food preparation, or making fires, if you only have one knife to survive in the wild, you want it to be this one. The easy answer to this is a bit of everything. Check on BladeHQ What Do You Use a Bushcraft Knife For?

The Superseding Indictment goes on to describe the various acts allegedly committed by the defendants and others as members of the group, including the distribution of heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and oxycodone pills the disbursement and collection of tens of thousands of dollars of unlawful bookmaking and other debts “owed” to the group at interest rates as high as 400% and even an alleged conspiracy to kidnap or murder a drug dealer in order to protect the reputation of the Philadelphia LCN after the dealer sold members of the group fake drugs. The remaining five defendants are charged with allegedly committing a variety of other offenses, including conducting an illegal gambling business, conspiracy to make extortionate extensions of credit, and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, in partnership with other members and associates of the Philadelphia LCN.Īs alleged in the Superseding Indictment, on October 15, 2015, defendants Steven Mazzone, Domenic Grande and Salvatore Mazzone participated in a “making ceremony” (as detailed above) in a South Philadelphia residence, during which several new soldiers were inducted into the Philadelphia LCN. During a period beginning in August 2015, ten of the defendants allegedly conspired to conduct and participate in the affairs of the Philadelphia LCN through both a pattern of racketeering activity and through the collection of unlawful debts. Made members and associates who break Omerta may be targeted for death by other members of the group.Īs described in the Superseding Indictment, the Philadelphia LCN sought to use its reputation and influence to exercise control over criminal rackets, like bookmaking and loansharking in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey, particularly Atlantic City. Associates are men who engage in criminal activity on behalf of LCN but who have not been formally “made,” either because they are up-and-coming and aspire to full membership, or because they are ineligible to be made because they lack fully Italian ancestry. After this ceremony, these men (who must be of 100% Italian ancestry) are then referred to as “made members” of the LCN. Like other LCN families, the Philadelphia LCN is operated through a defined hierarchical structure, including a Boss, an Underboss (defendant Steven Mazzone), and Captains (defendant Domenic Grande), who oversee “crews” consisting of “soldiers” and “associates.” As detailed in the Superseding Indictment, soldiers are members of the family who have been formally initiated through a ritual called a “making ceremony,” during which they swear allegiance to LCN above all else, take a vow of secrecy about the organization (the Code of Silence or “Omerta”), and agree to commit violence on behalf of the LCN, if necessary. The purpose of the LCN in Philadelphia and elsewhere is to make money through the commission of various crimes, including illegal gambling, loansharking, drug trafficking, and extortion. LM was updated to allow for far more ExGFX files, and a new feature was added for level-specific tile and palette animation. It wasn't until mid-2003 that we started trying to get it done in time for LM's next release. This was also around the same time that I and Zero-G started working on Demo World TLC, but it also stalled early in 2003. Development on the program slowed to a crawl. But by mid-2002, Lunar Magic's development finally began winding down.Īfter releasing version 1.51 in September 2002, there was a long period where I was busy with other things. In early 2002, text editing for the overworld level names, the castle event sequences, and the message boxes had also been implemented. In that time I had added extra graphics, 4bpp support, custom palettes, clipboard support, extended animated tiles, bypass dialogs, Japanese ROM support, layer 2 editing for the overworld, and all sorts of other minor enhancements.īy the end of 2001, the overworld editor had full layer 1 support, making it possible to redesign the level layout and overworld paths of SMW. Before I knew it, it was already September 2001, a full year since Lunar Magic had first been released. And then some extra ASM enhancements to the game. Well, there were indeed a few revisions and fixes. At that point I thought my job was pretty much complete, other than perhaps for a few minor revisions that could be added as needed. In late September it was finally released to the public for the first time. I quickly wrapped up most of the loose ends by early September. So I put in sprite support, as well as an "Add Sprites" GUI and a couple small ASM ROM modifications. Which was finished sometime in mid-August.īy then of course I was horrified by the sheer amount of time it had taken to build the silly program, but I was more horrified still to realize that the whole thing would be a waste if I didn't put in the sprite support to finish it off. I also created the MWL format, put in layer 2 support, and added a bunch of other dialogs and what-nots that were essential to changing the properties of a level. Then came implementing an "Add Object" GUI, without which editing Mario Levels would become an exercise in extreme tediousness. I implemented the drag/drop support I had originally planned for SMRPG's editor, and rewrote the GFX routines to handle Mario World's format. Then I reused the old GUI for the unfinished prototype of the Sailor Moon Map Editor to begin constructing the level editor. I went on to decode the level layout data, which required disassembling a fair portion of the ROM's ASM code. I started out in February 2000 by figuring out the compression format for the graphics and building the necessary decompression and recompression tools. I began looking into making an editor for SMW shortly after releasing the SoM VWF patch, mostly on a whim to see how hard it would be. It wasn't originally intended to be a long term project, but things turned out otherwise. During its 19 year span of being the only level editor available for this classic game, it's inspired the creation of countless modifications of SMW by fans and casual players alike. Lunar Magic is a level editor I created for Super Mario World (SNES). FuSoYa's Niche - Lunar Magic SMW Editor Introduction DS3 attempts to keep you glued to the seat via fast paced shooting, fast paced action, rolling gameplay that does not feel choppy or inconsistent. Once you get used to slaying necromorphs and playing with their dead bodies, they are no longer scary. Once you get used to the monsters popping out in front of you, it stops being scary. Bottom line: Dead Space cannot continue to be "scary" to returning veterans, it's a futile and impossible venture. In fact it's almost the opposite of what everyone is complaining about. The differences between DS3 and previous installments also are not analogous to the differences between RE6 and 5. Anyone attempting to argue this in their review should offer you an immediate clue to skip their review they are stupid and their reviews are stupid. DS3 DOES NOT COMPARE IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM TO THE DEBAUCLE OF THE LATEST RESIDENT EVIL. I suspect many of the reviewers here giving DS3 negative reviews did not play it on impossible. YMMV if you play on any mode other than impossible. It's not incredibly difficult but it's enough to avoid being over tedious, while still offering enough of a challenge to keep you interested. You still chop limbs off of the enemies, you still prioritize targets and you still have to watch your back. DS3 still offers the hallway crawling and zero-G experiences DS1 and 2 had. You can space jump and explore the outside of the space station, for example. It also accomplishes making the various space stations and locations you visit seem real, and the scenarios Isaac encounters also more realistic. DS3 allows you to backtrack more which is an attempt to make the game feel less linear, which it accomplishes as well as one could expect for a game that does not try to be a RPG. DS3 still captures the remoteness of space, the feeling of claustrophobia, the sterile and industrial approach to space stations that DS1 and 2 had. And that's not to say the action sequences felt alien to the rest of the gameplay, they felt very fluid and tied very well into the rest. More items, more weapons, more monsters (but many of the same ones as well), a bit more story and a bit more action sequences. They took the existing concepts and added on top of them. It's really just a logical step forward from DS2 same as DS2 was to the original. For me Dead Space was about the shooting aspect which DS3 delivers more so than any of the previous ones. If you played the game on anything other than impossible, you should also put down your controller, none of the DS installments were incredibly difficult even on the hardest setting, especially with a mouse/pad instead of a analog stick at your disposal. If you like just simple weapons, there is also a game mode included for this. Yes there are many powerful weapons which can make it easier. If you like scrounging for ammo, they have a game mode for this. I'm sorry but after 3 installments of the game, even if DS1 had anything resembling scary it would have worn off by now for returning players, which is precisely why DS3 does not try to scare and instead throws more monsters at you. The only thing that makes any of these games "scary" is the slight adrenaline rush received by having to kill swarms of weird moving monsters before you get surrounded and mutilated. If your idea of scary is a Disney park ride where arbitrary props pop out of the walls to scare you, then you need to go ride those some more and put down your controller. DS1 was scary for about the first couple hours until killing monsters became a natural and simple process, there were no more scares to be had. It's not really anymore of an action game than it adding more elaborate action sequences here and there, which by no means are placed in a way that constantly interrupts the gameplay. I don't understand people saying that DS3 is any different than DS1 or 2. I loved that about DS1 but I find that stuff more funny in a twisted way than scary. Usually your head just gets ripped off, body decapitated, maybe a necromorph throws up in your face, but you won't see them pick you up and dismember you piece-by-piece then crawl into your empty neck socket and lumber your corpse around the room. Usually Let me start by saying THE ONLY shortcoming DS3 or DS2 have had to DS1 was less focus on elaborate and sadistic/sick dead sequences. Let me start by saying THE ONLY shortcoming DS3 or DS2 have had to DS1 was less focus on elaborate and sadistic/sick dead sequences. Note on AEs: Apple hasn't sold them in several years, but they have continued to update them (rarely), adding AirPlay 2, and some security update. If it ever disappears from the LAN that seems the best solution.) (The only thing I didn't need in this case was a factory reset of the AE, because the AE never disappeared from the LAN, and always showed up on all but one of our iOS devices. Interesting that fixing it on one AE fixed Airplay on both.īasically I think your suggestions were ALL right. This time I saved it for last because it is a minor nuisance.Īlso seems likely that either the power reset of the AE or the toggle of Airplay on the AE would have worked on its own, if followed by a hard reset of the iPhone, but I didn't test it that way. If there is a next time, I will try that first. Seems likely that the suggestion to reset network settings on that iPhone would have worked as well, based on this hypothesis. I conclude that some table of services available on the LAN was (suddenly) not picking up the AEs on that one phone, until some combination of power cycling the AE or toggling Airplay on that AE got the data out there in a mode where the hard-restated iPhone picked it up. I have still not hard restarted the second AE, because I've been too lazy/busy to bring the ladder, and it is an interesting test. They have both continued to show up and work very responsively since then. So I hard restarted the iPhone, and then both AEs showed up again in the Airplay list. So I toggled the Airplay setting on that AE. This implied some misconfiguration of the AEs, so I power cycled one of the AEs. Tried toggling Airplay off then on again one AE, and found that it was greyed out in the "on" mode on both AEs. Since I had two Airport Expresses that both suddenly did not show up in the Airplay list on one of our many iOS devices I decided to try different ideas on each AE. Here's what worked, in case anyone else runs into this. Thanks for the excellent advice, everyone! It was extremely helpful. Restart the Airport Expresses through Airport utility The following airplay devices do show up everywhere, including the offending iPhone 12 Pro Max I've been using all of this gear for years without such a problem. Now open AirPort and locate what network has been created in the Soft Reset mode. The amber light will flash and AirPort Express will get into its Soft Reset mode after a while. Press down the button for 1 second and let it go. Make sure the device is connected to the power this time. Take a pointy tool for poking into the reset button as mentioned in the earlier step. This method allows a user to manually input their desired settings into the device followed by a prompt reset. Soft Reset is different from restoring factory defaults as the user needs to get into the software settings of this device. The light should start flashing in amber color within a while, and you can let the button go. Hold down the button and put the power source back on.
